Changdeokgung was designated as a World Cultural Heritage together with Hwasung, Suwon by the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Committee in December 1997 in a meeting in Napoli, Italy. Huwon, which means “rear garden”, is within Changdeokgung and was built during the reign of King Taejong. It has served as a resting area for kings and royal families. The garden has previously been called Bukwon (meaning “Northern Garden”) and Geumwon (“Forbidden Garden”) but was referred to as Biwon (“Secret Garden”) since the rule of King Gojong. It is one of the most enchanting gardens in Korea with its gentle slopes and valleys that have been left unchanged in their natural state. Only minimal touches have been made to preserve the garden. There are numerous pavilions and ponds including Buyongjeong, Buyongji, Juhabru, Eosumun, Yeonghwadang, Bullomun, Aeryeonjeong, and Yeongyeongdang. Huwon is known to be most beautiful when the leaves turn color and start to fall in autumn.
